This years special activity was a visit to Whale Island.
The three sisters at the top of the saddle
Quite a steep cliff on the ocean side.
Patrick shows us a kiwi egg which is huge compared with the size of the bird.
Now he shows us the kiwi tracking equipment but of course the kiwi are asleep. The device gives a clicking sound which will get louder as you move closers to where they are.
This is a gully of thermal activity. It was not very spectacular but I had not expected any on Whale Island.
We went down to the beach and the hot water was bubbling up through the sand.
